A Spotlight on Outreach Events at AIDGwinnett
Dear Greg,
HIV prevention is in full swing!

Of course, summer is always a busy time for HIV prevention.

But this year, our major HIV outreach events are bigger than ever before!

For example, on National HIV Testing Day (June 27) we will be conducting HIV testing at the Compound - one of Atlanta's largest and most popular nightclubs.  Read more below!

And we also doubled our HIV testing capacity in anticipation of the 2007 Atlanta Pride Festival (June 23-24) where the attendance exceeded 300,000 people this past weekend.

Our strong team of dedicated and trained volunteers will be providing life-saving education and resources at literally dozens of locations in June and July.

Please join me in saying "Thank You" to our volunteers!  Without them our work would not be possible.

Sincerely,
Larry M. Lehman
Executive Director, AIDGwinnett

AIDGwinnett Hits the Atlanta Pride Festival - Again!
AIDGwinnett at the Atlanta Pride Festival 2007Last year, AIDGwinnett conducted HIV rapid testing outreach at the Atlanta Pride Festival with tremendous success.  We tested 40 people, and a very large number of these (ten percent) were living with HIV but previously unaware of their HIV-positive status.

In 2007, AIDGwinnett conducted HIV rapid testing outreach at the Atlanta Pride Festival once again -- but this time with double the capacity!

More than 40 volunteers signed-up to help!

As a result of our incredible teamwork and thanks to the generosity of OraSure Technologies, we tested more than 300 people using the OraQuick Advance HIV-1/2 Antibody Test!  OraSure Technologies made a large donation of HIV rapid testing kits and various promotional supplies to support AIDGwinnett at the 2007 Atlanta Pride Festival.

We are grateful to our entire team of volunteers who supported our campaign this year, including (in alphabetical order): Miguel Adame, Gilliam Anderson, Stephanie Anspaugh, Steven Bales, Sonja Ballard, Heather Cole-Lewis, Brittney Copeland, Sean Crigg, Kitu Dave, Alyssa Davis, Tashya C. New Graduates in Popular HIV Rapid Testing Course
AIDGwinnett HIV Counseling trainingAIDGwinnett recently trained 16 volunteers and staff in the popular course titled "Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling" using a curriculum written by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  This course has proven to be extremely popular and is always "Sold Out" with a long waiting list.

"Because this course was so popular, we decided to offer it again in August 2007," explained Kyle Monroe-Spencer, Director of Prevention Education at AIDGwinnett.

Course participants learn how to provide counseling on the risks of HIV/STD transmission and specific HIV risk reduction skills as part of a volunteer program of anonymous, individualized HIV testing implemented in community-based settings.  Participants also learn about the availability of FDA-approved rapid HIV testing kits, which provide quick results without a syringe.

This training demonstrates effective, client-centered HIV prevention counseling strategies to assist people in reducing their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, hepatitis, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. Participants learn how to personalize counseling messages and develop realistic and incremental risk reduction plans with their clients.  The workshop will also teach participants how to facilitate effective referrals for support, encouragement, medical care, antiretroviral drug therapy and other critical services for clients who are found to be HIV-positive.
In Memory of AIDGwinnett founder Len Terrell
(August 11, 1940 - April 6, 2007)

It is with profound sadness that the Board of Directors and staff of AIDGwinnett announce the passing of one of our founders, Len Terrell.  Len was a strong advocate and a dear friend for people living with HIV.  He served as chairman of our local Ryan White Consortium for many years and advocated on numerous local, state and federal issues.  The Ric Crawford Clinic program at AID Gwinnett is named in honor of Len and Peggy's late son, Ric Crawford.

On behalf of the thousands of local residents whose lives Len touched either directly or indirectly, AID Gwinnett would like to extend our love, support and sympathy to Peggy, the Terrell family and their many friends during this very difficult time.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials to: Section United Methodist Church 153 Church Street Section, Al. 35771; or AID Gwinnett, Inc. 3075 Breckenridge Blvd. Suite 415 Duluth, Georgia 30096.
